Port and incipient mental collapse (not my own)
Hooray, I've finally found something to write about....
Last night we had the joy of half-way hall- a dinner celebrating the fact that we were halfway through our degree. This was quite weird in itself actually, and quite a sobering thought; quite a few of my friends are looking at graduate jobs and internships, and it really underlined how fleeting the whole Cambridge thing is.
The dinner itself was rather nice, leek and potato soup followed by indeterminate wildfowl (as always) and then a passion-fruit and mango meringue. The company was excellent as always, at least at first. It's always nice to sit next to people you only slightly know, it makes a change from seeing the same faces all the time. More importantly, the port that was served after dinner was excellent, and more then made up for the wine. (have a photo by the way)
By the time the bar closed we were all well-lubricated and having a very nice time. So far so good...
Unfortunately this was when it all fell to pieces. I made the rather stupid mistake of inviting certain people back to my room afterwards- and it was at this point that the night became a groteque parody of "Who's afraid of Virginia Woolfe?" (only without the overtones of superpower struggle, at least as far as I could tell). All the pieces were in place- academic people, late night post-party drinks, gigantic _issues_ lurking partially concealed underneath the increasingly strained surface... Not particularly wanting to go into it, suffice to say that it was not the most fun I've ever had- and port was spilt everywhere. First task of the day is to buy some Vanish.
So yeah, a rather mixed night. Some good photos though.
