A few days in Breckenridge

Leaving LA, we had decided to stay a few days in the Rockies, en route to the east coast, and chose to make Breckenridge our base. Interesting place - obviously a well established town but nevertheless we felt there was an artificial feel to it. The palette for the paintwork on the buildings might have had something to do with it!

We had fun exploring the Rocky Mountain National Park, encountering a group of bikers from Wisconsin with their highly polished Harley Davisons. One of them, from Green Bay, explained that they'd travelled around 2800 miles so far, and that his bike was for sale because he had a new one on order - not bad for a 78 year old, we thought!

Another day out took us to Leadville, and then on to Vail. What contrasts!

Leadville had very much had its day and was a sorry kind of place in spite of friendly people and a long history.

Vail was a total construct - built in the style of a European Alpine village for those with very deep pockets! We had fun, nevertheless, enjoying spaetzle and weissbier in the "stuebli".

Above all, though, much as we enjoyed our stay in Colorado, it will be remembered for the effects of altitude - the dry air caused us real discomfort with our sinuses and it was a great relief to get back to normal!
