The best laid plans...

Well, today we should have been heading to Heathrow, to catch a BA flight to Zurich sometime around midday....

Instead, we had one of those awful phone calls yesterday afternoon, in which Bettine (Mark's Mum) told us that she had had an accident when she was fitting a new gas canister to her small stove - they were in the middle of a power cut and she was making tea. It seems as though as she was in the process of fitting the new canister, it blew up, causing burns to her head, neck and hands. She had the presence of mind to first ring for an ambulance, to put out the resultant fire in the kitchen sink, then telephone us to say what had happened. Oh, and in the meantime, she'd put together all of Richard's medication for the evening.

She spent the evening first at Gloucester Royal Hospital, was transferred to the burns unit at Frenchay hopsital, Bristol, where she remained overnight. Edward spent the night over with his Grandpy, ensuring that his needs were taken care of.

We await news this morning, of whether she will be allowed home or if she must stay in hospital longer.

Not exactly the way we'd planned to spend New Years Eve, but thankfully all is taken care of and we are confident Bettine is in good hands.

Switzerland will await us at some point soon, when we'll revisit our travel plans and make alternative arrangements to meet Tonie, Peter, Kathy, Regi and Erich.....
