The Perne Feast
A bit of a delayed entry this, but last Friday we enjoyed one of the traditional highlights of any Peterhouse term- the *insert benefactor's name here* Feast. This time round our excuse to eat large amounts of excellent food and get drunk was Dr Andrew Perne, who apparently was Master from 1554-89 and bequeathed the College's first library.
The meal began with an excellent chicken liver Pate, one of the nicest starters we've ever had for a feast. This was accompanied by some rather interestingly sherry-like French wine which I can't immediately remember the name of (was 1996 vintage though). After a fair bit of discussion and sampling we decided it was meant to be like that and wasn't corked, although we're still not exactly sure... This was followed by some beautifully cooked Lamb, with an olive and vine-leaf insert and a excellent French Red (1997 if I remember rightly). Finally, we were given a Tamarillo with macadamia nut ice-cream. The ice-cream was excellent, the Tamarillo less so (Emma narrowed down the taste to vomit, which while disgusting was pretty accurate). They did look very impressive on the plate though;
The evening was enlivened by myself and Clover's decision to bring along our increasingly vast hat collection, and soon most people were wearing something or other on their heads. We even convinced the Dean to try our Ming Dynasty helmet when he came up to check on us...
We also enjoyed some very nice cigars which Claire (one of the fellows who sings with us) had liberated from the Combination room. Excellent food, port and cigars in an ancient wood-paneled room - what could be more Cambridge? Although to my knowledge few Fellows' dinners involve Hungarian helmets from the second world war... (having said that if any were to involve such things, it'd be Peterhouse)
